Finding Light in the Jungle

In this Women on Wisdom episode, Heather Arthur tells a story that captures the essence of fear, perspective, and self-awareness.

Alone in a dense jungle where the sunlight barely broke through, Heather found herself gripped by fear — and frustration. Every sound felt threatening. Every shadow, a danger. And as she waited, she began to grow angry that she’d been left there alone.

Then came the sound of an insect — that irritating buzz circling her head — followed by a single beam of sunlight piercing the canopy. In that moment, Heather saw the bug, and something shifted. What she had labeled as fear and annoyance transformed into insight: her irritation wasn’t about the bug at all. It was her fear, reflected outward.

By reframing her reaction, she realized that the light — both literal and metaphorical — only appeared once she stopped blaming what was outside and accepted what was within.

It’s a powerful reminder that leadership, like life, often asks us to find calm in the chaos — and to see challenge as a teacher, not a threat.
